A root canal is a simple treatment that can save your natural teeth and prevent the need for a dental implant or a bridge. Did you know that many dentists do not do any root canals. This forces you to take a trip to an unfamiliar endodontist and pay a specialist for even the most simple root canals.
A root canal becomes necessary when the pulp within the tooth becomes infected. This can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures on the tooth. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as a visible crack or damage to the tooth, swelling of the tissue near the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums.
If you experience any of these symptoms, Dr. Mattila may recommend root canal treatment to eliminate the diseased pulp. We will either perform the procedure at our office, or refer you to a Green Bay endodontist.
The injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the treatment required. Success for this type of treatment occurs in greater than 90% of cases. We use local anesthesia to eliminate pain and reduce discomfort. Once the nerve is removed from the tooth, there will be no more pain within the tooth.
Your dentist will decide on what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth. Most commonly, the tooth will be best restored with a dental crown.
