When going in for dental work, it’s critical to know whether or not the services you’ll be receiving are covered by your dental insurance. If you have an HMO dental policy that wants you to choose an in-network dentist, for example, you could save money by ensuring you see a dentist that accepts HMO insurance, or an in-network provider, rather than an out-of-network provider. Regardless of which type of dental insurance you hold, however, you need to know what dental services are covered under your policy and how much is covered; that way, you go in with a reasonable idea of how much you’ll have to pay for those procedures out of pocket.
When looking for a dentist near me who accepts my insurance, give us a try. At Willow Bay Dental Care, we are an in-network provider for many HMO plans. Call us today to find out if we’re in your network.
Services Dental Insurance Covers
Most dental insurance policies include free or low-cost access to standard professional dental cleanings and routine dental exams. Many dental policies will also cover part of the cost of extractions and fillings once you meet any deductible. Certain dental policies will even pay part of the cost of crowns, root canals, periodontics, endodontics and other more extensive work; there may be a waiting period before you start these procedures, however. Some dental plans, after being in effect for some length of time, may cover a larger portion of such services.
Kinds of Dental Insurances
Just finding a dentist that takes insurance isn't enough to know whether the services you're looking for will be covered or how much of their cost will be covered. Dental insurance includes a couple of types of plans: managed care plans, which have a network of dentists who participate, and indemnity plans, which pay a certain amount for a certain service no matter the dentist who provides it.
Within managed care dental plans are several kinds: primarily DHMOs (or Dental HMOs) and DPPOs (or Dental PPOs,) but in some areas, DPOS (Dental Point of Service) and DEPOs (Dental Exclusive Provider Organizations) are also available.
DHMOs and DEPOs typically cover only in-network dental services; DHMOs also require a referral from your primary care dentist in order to see a specialist. DPOS and DPPOs typically provide out-of-network coverage options, though at a much higher cost than seeing an in-network one.
If your dentist is not in-network, even if you see them under a dental indemnity policy, the dentist can bill you for whatever portion of their fees are above the amount your dental carrier will agree to pay as a “reasonable and customary” charge. This may even be on top of your normal deductible under the policy.
This is why it's so important to know which dentist takes my insurance and if it's a dentist that accepts PPO insurance or HMO insurance.
If you're trying to figure out how to use my dental insurance with a dentist in Green Bay, give us a call and we'll take you through it step by step. We accept many insurance plans and have in-network status with a large number of them.
Does Dental Insurance Have a Waiting Period?
Dental insurance plans frequently require a waiting period from the start of coverage–typically between six months and one year–before certain covered dental work can begin. Insurance providers institute these waiting periods to prevent people from purchasing a dental policy only because they know they have an expensive dental procedure coming up.
Does Dental Insurance Cover Cosmetic Dentistry?
Dental plans will not typically cover treatments that are not considered essential, or medically necessary to restore dental functioning. Cosmetic treatments may sometimes have a restorative benefit, but if they are still considered primarily cosmetic, many dental plans will not cover any of the cost for them. In some cases, if a treatment serves both cosmetic and restorative purposes, a dental plan may pay for up to half of it. As you can see, it is vital before you schedule any cosmetic dental procedure that you review your dental policy closely or call your dental insurance provider to see if any portion of the cosmetic dental treatments you’re considering is covered under your plan;
